Everyone sees things through a different lens.  The world is shaped by your experiences.

By shifting your default viewpoint, you open yourself to new insights and experiences.  This shifted viewpoint allows you to view, identify, explore and solve problems in different ways.

In order to do this, we need to construct a basic model that describes the views an individual can have and then use this model to shift perspectives.

THE MODEL

An individual’s worldviews are shaped by Nature and Nurture.

Nature is that with which we are born; it’s the cards we are dealt and those things that we don’t have any choice over.

Nurture are those traits that we have some agency over.  While the circumstances of our upbringing will shape these (and make acquisition of these more or less difficult), they are after attributes that are shaped by our choices and actions.

For our model, we are going to use these two elements to create a ‘cube’ of perspectives.  This cube will be constructed by the three most influential elements in each space.  Each dimensions will be a continuum, however, for simplicity we’ll start with only a couple of options (two) for each.  As a result of this model, we’ll have a ‘cube’ of up to 8 different ‘states’ for Nature.  And the same for Nurture.  This will allow us to have 8 viewpoints from each – and therefore, a combined set of views from 64 perspectives.

THE NATURE CUBE

Initially, we’ll assert the following three things are the most influential aspects of our ‘nature’ that shapes how we see and experience the world: Our Assigned Sex at Birth, Our Ethnicity, Our birth Location.

  • Birth Sex: Male, Female.
  • Ethnicity: Ethnic Majority, Ethnic Minority
  • Birth Location: Developed, Developing

THE NURTURE CUBE

Initially, we’ll assert the following are the most influential aspects of our nurture for shaping our worldviews: Our Social Economic Status, Our Education Level, Our ‘Worldliness’.

  • Socio-economic status: Rich, Poor
  • Educational Level: Rudimentary, Advanced
  • ‘Worldliness’: Well-travelled, Not Well travelled

CREATING THE VIEWS

Based on an assessment of the original view point, foundational segments will be selected; these segments represent the most likely origination of the particular worldview.

Three alternative views are then created:

  • The first (Alex’s Worldview), inverts all the original dimensions of the Nature Cube.  This inverted Nature Cube is paired with the original Nurture Cube to generate a new viewpoint.
  • The second (Bobby’s Worldview), inverts all the original dimensions of the Nurture Cube).  This inverted Nurture Cube is then paired with the original Nature Cube to generate a new viewpoint.
  • The third (Charlie’s Worldview) inverts all the original dimensions of both cubes.  The two unverted cubes are then used to generate a new viewpoint.

IMPORTANT NOTE

These dimensions are a starting point – they do not reflect the entirety of the rich tapestry and people and experiences.  They will also change over time – it’s therefore important that these get reviewed on a regular basis and as we learn more, they are replaced and refined.
